A personal testimonial on the importance of diet, exercise, mental focus and a spiritual center in obtaining and maintaining optimum health. I've had high cholesterol for years and a few doctors have wanted me to go on medication to treat it. I have firmly stood against it, being a firm believer that healthy choices in diet, exercise and the mind/body/spirit connection is the key (and finding the right combination of what works for YOU).
We are not destined to need prescription medication to manage our health, have the same diseases, or lifestyle as the generations before us. While we may be genetically be predisposed to medical conditions (with me high cholesterol certainly runs in my family), it isn't written in stone that we will face the same future with our health and well being. I prefer to think of these medical conditions as an opportunity for us to make healthy choices and lifestyle changes so that we don't live into that future. And given the amount of research I've done on the topic, I also subscribe to the theory that health issues get manifested from our relationship to stress and our negative and limiting thoughts and beliefs. It's our body's way of communicating with us and a warning sign to do some course correction.
In September my cholesterol was 201. In October I started working out 5-6 days a week and continued to make healthy food choices. I also moved to LA - physically putting myself in an environment where there are so many options for making healthy choices, living an active lifestyle, benefiting from more sunny days, expanding my thinking and pursuing a spiritual life (medication, various philosophies, etc.). I just got latest results of my cholesterol and it is 143...an ALL time low. I've also decreased my LDL (the "bad cholesterol") from 141 to 82.
This is a tremendous personal achievement for me in my own journey to be one who obtains and maintains optimum health. And in my mind a miracle, given what doctors have shared with me - that this was something I would deal with my whole life that it could result in other health risks like a heart attack and that medication was the only hope I had of treating it. While I understand that doctors are educated in a particular paradigm, that didn't provide me much of anything but to perpetuate fear, concern and a destined future. It didn't provide me with any solution that I believed was workable for me or that I was willing to buy into.
Having had periods in my life where I have not experienced being healthy due to injury, illness or emotional stress, I am committed and determined to live a life that is physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually fit. I'm clear that having that life comes from the choices I make and that I possess the power within me to make and maintain those changes. Not having health concerns to deal with has enabled me to focus on what truly matters to me and to be actively building that life. It also has provided with with a sense of purpose and has enabled me to contribute to others in ways I never imagined.
I am grateful to have discovered this way of living and wanted to share this, as each of us possesses the same power to make those changes. It starts with the desire and then being willing to make changes. Then create a workable structure, apply commitment, focus, action and most importantly, keep your promises to yourself. I promise the rewards are tremendous and that you will rewrite your future and the future of those around you.
Be Happy, Healthy and Hot!
Love,
Nina
